StrangeDownloader - The ISU Off-Campus downloading utility

Welcome to the new and hopefully improved StrangeDownloader. If you are unfamiliar with StrangeDownloader, simply put, it allows off-campus Iowa State students to download files from the residence halls just like they did when in the dorms.

News:
9 Aug 2002 - CVS is up and running smoothly, and will be where I am working from. If you are interested in assisting in the development, feel free to download the cvs tree, and submit patches to me at dustyd@iastate.edu . After you've submitted a few patches and are familiar with the code and with the general direction of the project, I would be glad to give you read/write access to the cvs, if you so desire.

In addition, I have added another mailing list, strangedownload-cvs, which gets messages when files are commited to the cvs, so you can track closely the changes that are being made to the source.. thanks.

1 Aug 2002 - Source code has been posted. Both in cvs form and in zip & tar.gz files...
30 July 2002 - the 0.7.0 full install was missing a file which made the internal ftp server not work. I have fixed the problem, and have reuploaded a new install. If you are having problems like this "NullPointerException: ftp/server/.../FtpStatus.properties", downloading the 0.7.0 upgrade will solve this...
30 July 2002 - Released version 0.7.0... too many bugfixes to list here. Namely, added the Site Manager, fixed it so it works fine behind firewalls, and made the installation so it will install anywhere... checkout the full changelog here
22 July 2002 - I've discovered a number of bugs in the 0.6.0 release that I think would be good to be rid of before completely unveiling the program. I'm gonna go ahead and take care of these, and then publicly announce the release of the 0.6.1 version. There will be an upgrade for users of the 0.6.0 version who don't want to download the JVM again. :-)

22 July 2002 - Initial public release of JStrangeDownloader. (version 0.6.0). This version addresses most of the issues determined during beta testing. Thanks especially to Sarcoptic for his help in the testing process.

Requirements
:

  JStrangeDownloader requires the following:
  • An ISU Project Vincent username (an ISU email address)
  • A computer running Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP (Note: future releases will be cross platform ie Linux, Mac, etc)

Optional:

  • An FTP server of your choice (JStrangeDownloader has a built in FTP server so its not necessary to run a separate server)
  • If your computer is behind a firewall/router, you will need to forward a port to your computer (more info about this in the installation instructions)

Legacy Versions
:

As many of you are aware, there have been 2 prior major releases of the StrangeDownload product line. First came the TeraTerm scripts. A rough collection of scripts designed to run within TeraTerm, an excellent terminal emulation program. Although they worked, the scripts were neither dependable nor very fast.

Next came the product you all have come to know and love: StrangeDownloader. This version experienced widespread usage, and was overall a decent product.

With the onset of JStrangeDownloader, I am trying to retire these products. However, if you would like to try them out, they can be downloaded at the following locations:

TeraTerm scripts: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~dustyd/offcampus.html

StrangeDownloader (original): http://www.public.iastate.edu/~dustyd/off-campus/
